Happy Dusshera and Navratri

For our dear readers,

Wishing a very happy dasara and vijayadashami festival! May Goddess Durga bless all with good health and wealth.
The origin of Dasara goes way back to the Vijayanagar dynasty in 15th Century. The Wodeyars of Mysore continued this colourful & religious celebration under the leadership of Raja Wodeyar in the year 1610. Dasara is also known as the 'Navarathri', where nine days of worship & celebration culminate on the 10th day, known as 'Vijaydashami'Mysore
The legend associated with the Shami tree finds commemoration during the renowned Navaratri celebrations at Mysore, which otherwise strongly emphasizes the Durga legend described above, as may be expected in the city built at the very site of the events of the Durga legend. On Vijaydashami day, at the culmination of a colourful 10-day celebration, the goddess Chamundeshwari is worshipped and then borne in a Golden Ambari or elephant-mounted throne, in a grand procession, through the city of Mysore, from the historical Mysore Palace to the Banni Mantapa. Banni is the Kannada word for the Sanskrit Shami, and Mantapa means "Pavilion". Shami (Banni) (Acacia Ferruginea) The Shami leaves occupy pride of place during the Dussara festival and they are regarded as golden leaves. It is reported that the legendary poet Kalidasa got enlightenment and divine power by doing penance under the Shami tree and worshiping it. Our farmers believe that Shami trees in their fields enhance the fertility of land and sustain the productive capacity of their fields.
