Republic Day and Solar Eclipse

Dear readers,

Wishing everyone a very happy republic day as our nation celebrates its 60th year and progressive with its commitment on peace, harmony and friendship to our neighbours.

An excerpt from Yahoo News,
Greeting India on the occasion of the country's 60th Republic Day, US President Barack Obama said Indians have no better friend and partner than the people of the United States.
"As the Indian people celebrate Republic Day all across India, they should know that they have no better friend and partner than the people of the United States," Obama said. Obama, who calls India as a natural ally of the US and seeks inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi, in a message said: "It is our shared values that form the bedrock of a robust relationship across peoples and governments.
"Those values and ideals provide the strength that enables us to meet any challenge, particularly from those who use violence to try to undermine our free and open societies."
As Indians and people of Indian origin in the US and around the world celebrate Republic Day on January 26, Obama said: "I send the warmest greetings of the American people to the people of India. Together, we celebrate our shared belief in democracy, liberty, pluralism, and religious tolerance."
Partial Solar Eclipse to be seen in south, N-E India on Jan 26.
A celestial spectacle awaits sky watchers this Republic Day when the Moon covers a portion of the Sun resulting in a partial solar eclipse. While star gazers in north-eastern, eastern and southern parts of the country will witness a partial eclipse of the sun, those in southern parts of Africa, Antarctica, South East Asia and Australia will be treated to a rare annular solar eclipse. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is farther from the Earth than normal in its elliptical orbit, and hence its apparent size is not quite sufficient to cover the Sun completely, Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) President C B Devgun said. Even though the Sun-Moon-Earth alignment is perfect, the Moon in its farther point will appear slightly smaller in diameter than the Sun and a thin ring of sunlight will remain visible around the dark silhouette of the Moon, he said. The name annular eclipse comes from the Latin annulus, meaning ring. The best time to watch the eclipse in India will be between 3 pm and 3.30 pm.
