Papa's little girl is all grown up, so what's with him still playing pop cop? Turn on the charm machine and then tell us if he doesn't melt down and just let you be…

Charm him
Bat your eyelashes and put on your best dimply smile. Give him little pecks on the cheek to remind him how much you love him and then see the effects. Don't forget to give him an affectionate hug just like that, and thank him sweetly before digging into the box of jalebees he bought on his way home from work (hey you can take a few calories for your cause!).

Pamper him
Make him a cup of hot masala chai or serve him his favourite hot snack when he comes home from work. Do his bidding without grumbling too much, and he'll be more lenient when you ask for permission to see a late night movie. After all, you're being the perfect, responsible, well-behaved daughter!

Reminisce with him
Watch your first birthday video with him, flip through pictures of old family trips and talks about all the fun things you did together. In short, make him feel like he's father of the year - which he is, you're just reminding him of it. A little ego boosting buttering up will make him more open to your requests for more space for yourself.

Assure him
Make sure he realises you've grown up into a mature, responsible adult, and that you know your (and his) limits. Once he's sure he can trust you, he's more likely to give you breathing room. And he won't kick up too much of a fuss when you try to assert your independence.

After all, dad has your best interests at heart!
