An amalgam of the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R':
The cabinet approved the symbol - an amalgam of the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' without the stem and two parallel lines running at the top. The parallel lines symbolise the equal to sign. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters — capital 'R' and Devanagri 'Ra' which represents rupaiah. "My design is based on the tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between," said Dr Kumar, the man who designed the symbol from IIT Mumbai.A postgraduate from Indian Institute of Technology, D. Udaya Kumar is the man behind the symbol of the Indian rupee approved by the union cabinet. The Reserve Bank of India had announced the competition for a design of the rupee symbol with a cash prize of Rs.2.5 lakh.
